Good morning, Canadian County!
Thursday, Sept. 10 • Showers and storms, 87. The first real rain in weeks, and every lawn in the corridor has been waiting on it.
It is going to rain! I have said that about four times this summer and been wrong every time, so I am hedging. But the sky looks serious about it this time, and it is the closest thing to a promise we have had since July.
The catch, and it is story one: rain does not lift a burn ban. Not on its own, and not this week.
Also in here: a Mustang neighbor is the county's citizen of the year, the Czech Festival is turning 60, and the Piedmont data center has moved off the council agenda and onto a petition.
One question before we start: what is the one thing happening in your town that never makes it into this letter? Hit reply. I read every one.

THE DIGEST
🔥 The burn ban holds, rain or no rain
The Gist: The Canadian County Board of Commissioners extended the countywide burn ban for another seven days on Wednesday, citing continued extreme fire danger. That covers Yukon, Mustang, Piedmont and every unincorporated acre in between. Outdoor burning stays prohibited: no burn barrels, no debris piles, no pasture burning. The extension runs about a week from Sept. 9, so roughly through Sept. 16 unless the commissioners take it up again.
Why It Matters: Here is the part that is going to trip people up. Thursday's forecast is a 90% chance of showers and storms, the first meaningful rain the corridor has seen in weeks. A wet morning does not lift a burn ban. So if you were planning to finally deal with that brush pile this weekend, keep waiting. Grilling is generally fine. When you are not sure, call your fire department before you strike a match, not after.
🏆 A Mustang neighbor is county citizen of the year
The Gist: Ken Carpenter of Mustang was named the 2026 Outstanding Canadian County Citizen during Family Night at the Canadian County Fair! He was presented with a certificate and, in the best detail of the whole story, the winning cookie jar from the fair entries. One person gets this a year, out of the entire county.
Why It Matters: Congrats, Ken! This is exactly the kind of thing that happens on a weeknight at the Expo Center in El Reno and then never reaches the people who actually know the person. If you know Ken, tell him you saw it. If you do not, know that Mustang put up the county's citizen of the year this time around.
🥟 The Czech Festival turns 60
The Gist: It's official. The Oklahoma Czech Festival hits its 60th year this fall, and it lands Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2 and 3, in downtown Yukon. It started in 1966 and has run the first weekend of October ever since. The full slate is the usual: the parade, kolaches and klobasy, the carnival, the queen coronation, and dancing out at Czech Hall.
Why It Matters: Sixty years of anything in a town this size is worth stopping for. Practically speaking, treat this as your three-week warning. Roughly 50,000 people come to a town of 27,000! Downtown parking is gone by mid-morning Saturday, the good kolaches sell out earlier than anyone expects, and if you have family who might want to come see it, this is the year to make the call. We will run the full schedule and an honest parking plan the week before.
🏗️ The Piedmont data center moves from the council to a petition
The Gist: The proposed Piedmont data center has changed venues. It is no longer sitting on a City Council agenda waiting for a vote. A group of residents is now pursuing a ballot measure that would pause the project until water and noise studies are finished. As of this week, no measure has been certified for a ballot, no study has been ordered, and the council has taken no final action on the project itself.
Why It Matters: This changes who decides and how long it takes. A council vote happens in one room on one night. A ballot measure has to clear a paperwork process first, then go to registered voters on the county election calendar, which is slower and considerably more public. If you want to follow it rather than read about it later, the paperwork surfaces at Piedmont City Hall, and the council's agendas post ahead of each meeting. We said in issue one that we would follow this until it settles. That still holds, and what we cover is the process: what gets filed, what gets scheduled, what gets decided.
NEW & NOTEWORTHY
The free books are still coming
The Canadian County board of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library says its free monthly books will keep arriving for local kids following the death of the program's founder. If you have a child under 5 in Yukon, Mustang or Piedmont, this is the program that mails a book to your house every month at no cost to you, and the local board's message this week was aimed squarely at parents wondering whether that stops now. It does not.
